This evening on her MSNBC show, Rachel Maddow revealed some secrets from the Donald Trump’s 2005 federal tax return. The public has long been waiting for Donald Trump to release his tax returns, as he promised to during his campaign, but has since refused to do. A whitehouse.gov petition for the president to release his tax returns broke the record for most signatures back in January. His initial claim for not releasing his tax returns was that he was under audit by the IRS. Since Watergate, every single president has been under audit by the IRS during their tenure.
Despite immense pressure from the public, Trump continued to deny that people even wanted to see his tax returns. This tax return surfaced despite all apparent efforts of the Trump administration to keep them from being released. The fact that they have, signals that the leaks in the administration may still be as active as ever.
Undoubtedly tonight’s show was widely watched, with millions in Washington and beyond waiting to hear what she had obtained. Maddow claimed that the return was procured through David Cay. Johnston, an investigative reporter, who joined her on the show to explain what had been found.
Maddow began her show by highlighting the fact that the tax return’s surfacing was important in its own right, and running through the history of the Donald Trump tax return issue. She then discussed a mansion Trump bought and sold to a Russian Oligarch and connections to Deutsche Bank, the Bank of Cyprus and money Trump.
The origin of Trump’s income are of incredible interest, because if he recieved income from any of a multitude of sources, it represents a possible conflict of interest or even an illegal action that could be punishable. Other claims have surfaced that Trump undervalued his properties for tax purposes.
Maddow finally revealed that Trump paid 38 million dollars in taxes, on 153 million in income. The white house confirmed to Maddow’s show that the returns were real, while also stating the return was being illegally published and again calling the media fake.
This story will be updated as more facts arise.

The White house released a statement shortly before Maddow went on the air saying.
You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago.
“Before being elected President, Mr. Trump was one of the most successful businessmen in the world with a responsibility to his company, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required. That being said, Mr. Trump paid $38 million dollars even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction, on an income of more than $150 million dollars, as well as paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes and this illegally published return proves just that. Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns. The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans.”
